Classic Yule Log

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sifted cake flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 1/4 cup milk
  •
  • 1/8 cup confectioners' sugar
  •
  • 1 1/2 cups whipped cream
  •
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 8 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate, melted
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  •
  • 1/8 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon green food coloring
  • 8 ounces marzipan

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 15x10-inch jelly roll pan. Line with waxed paper. Grease paper.
  2. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Beat together sugar and egg yolks at high speed until light and fluffy. At low speed, alternately beat milk and flour mixture into egg mixture.
  4. Using clean beaters, beat egg whites at high speed until stiff, but not dry, peaks form. Fold one third of beaten whites into batter. Fold in remaining whites. Spread batter in prepared pan; smooth top.
  5. Bake cake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) until set, 12 minutes.
  6. Dust a clean cloth with confectioners' sugar. Turn cake out onto prepared cloth. Remove waxed paper. Trim cake edges. Starting with a long side, roll up cake, jelly-roll style. Transfer, seam-side down, to a wire rack to cool for 30 minutes.
  7. Unroll cake; remove cloth. Spread whipped cream over cake to within 1 inch of edges. Re-roll cake. Place, seam-side down, on serving plate.
  8. To prepare frosting, in a small saucepan, bring heavy cream, melted chocolate, and butter to a boil over medium heat, stirring vigorously until blended. Remove from heat. Let stand until set. Spread frosting over top and sides of cake.
  9. To prepare garnish, dust work surface with confectioners' sugar. Knead food coloring into marzipan until blended. Using a rolling pin dusted with confectioners' sugar, roll marzipan to a 1/8-inch thickness. Using a small knife, cut out leaves. Arrange leaves, cinnamon candies, and snowmen on top of cake and around plate. Dust with confectioners' sugar. Enjoy!

Relieve Holiday Stress by Silver RavenWolf

Relieve Holiday Stress! Braucherie Morning Ritual That Can Change Your Life! —
A Great Technique that you Can Use With My 30 Day Magickal Release Challenge!
by Silver RavenWolf

Sometimes, when things get rough, or tough, or stressful — we totally forget that we know how to do magick!   Negative emotions seethe or erupt, and all thoughts that we are truly in control fly completely from our minds.  By practicing this Five Minute Braucherei ritual each morning upon rising (whether you are first, second or third shift — when you wake up is fine) you will have a better grip on the day.  The practice takes about seven (7) days to set in (you might see small changes in your life right away); and about 30 days to bring about greater change.  If you are ready to take charge of your life, let go of the crap, and accept the abundance of the world around you, then this is the ritual for you!
Tools: You don’t need any except your mind.  However, if you would like to light a white candle, or incense — that’s fine, too. Whatever spiritual practice that facilitates calm and relaxation within yourself can be used here.
Preparation:  Find a place where you will not be disturbed.  As the ritual only takes about five minutes, you won’t need to lock yourself in the attic.  I know, though, what it is like to be a busy person with family members assuming its okay to interrupt you just-any-old-time.  So!  If the only place you can find peace is the bathroom while taking your morning shower — that’s fine.  Just lock the door.  The beauty about Braucherei is that you often whisper instead of speaking in a normal voice.  With the water running?  No one will hear you.
The Chants:  There are two and for best results, try to memorize them.  Don’t panic.  They’re easy, they rhyme, and if you’ve listened to my podcasts this past year, read my blog or been on FaceBook — you’re probably already familiar with them.
Let’s go through them so you understand exactly what you are doing.  The first chant is a general blessing charm that is thousands of years old, and is recited while facing east.  You can use hand motions (or not) while intoning the charm.  The most important aspect of both charms is to speak slowly, with feeling and with a sense of grace.  You are doing a spiritual thing — it is okay to open up and accept those energies.   Here is the first chant:
Eastwards I stand
For favors I pray
From Goddess Divine
And Lord of the Day
Earth lends Her power
And breath sends the spell
Days end will reveal
That all will be well.
Let’s quickly cover what this chant means and exactly what you are calling.  Eastwards I stand (the place of beginnings and the power of the sun) for favors I pray (you are asking for all the good stuff of this world and all others).  From Goddess Divine (feminine deity, crone/mother energy, moon energy) and the Lord of the Day (male divine, sage/father energy, the sun AND the planet that rules the day).  Together the two deities make One — the Balance.  Here are those daily planets in case you are new or have forgotten:
Monday — Moon
Tuesday — Mars
Wednesday — Mercury
Thursday — Jupiter
Friday — Venus
Saturday — Saturn
Sunday — Success
Earth lends Her power (the spirits of nature, the elements, that which is physical) and breath sends the spell (holy breath, Spirit, and your effort).  Days end will reveal that all will be well.  (You are agreeing that my the end of the day, no matter what, you will accept the favors given and be thankful for them.)
This chant is to be said nine (9) times, slowly, with feeling, and experiencing what you are saying deep within yourself.
The second chant the Seven Planetary Powers, is extremely simple.  First, you intone the name of the day you are experiencing, for example Tuesday, and then follow through with the rest of the chant.  Here is the chant:
Tuesday, Lord of the Day
Bring me Good Fortune in Every Way!
Although very simple, this is a powerful chant.  You are asking the planetary energies of the day to tune into your life and you are agreeing that you will accept the flow of what you have asked for — in this example — Good Fortune.  You can change this chant in to match what you need.  Let’s say you are working on a chronic illness, then you might say:
Tuesday, Lord of the Day
Bring me Good Health in Every Way!
Or, let’s say you are just so stressed out lately:
Tuesday, Lord of the Day
Bring me sweet peace in Every Way!
Like the first chant — take your time.  Say it slowly and with confidence.  Know in your heart that what you have asked for, you will receive.  Remember, that this second chant changes with the day.  If today is Monday, then you intone — Monday, Lord of the Day!  As you speak, reach out and connect with the ‘Lord’ of the day.   Repeat this chant nine (9) times.
That’s all there is to it.  After you finish the last chant, simply draw an equal-armed cross in the air to seal the working.  At the end of the day, give thanks to Spirit and the Lord of the Day for the favors you have received.  Sometimes, we are so busy during the day, we don’t realize that we’ve been given a gift if we don’t stop and think about what happened to us, or what we really spent our time on.  By concluding the working by giving thanks, you allow yourself time to review your experiences.  Be careful not to dwell on negative situations, even though they occurred to teach us something.  Although that kind of review is good and necessary, it isn’t a part of this particular working, which is designed to teach you and continue to aid you in drawing positive energies toward you.  Thinking about the iced tea jug that blew apart all over the backseat of the car is not acceptable in this instance.
If you would like to make this little ritual more powerful, then employ the Lesser Banishing Ritual between the two chants.  You can find this ritual in my Solitary Witch book, my HexCraft book, and in Donald Michael Kraig’s Modern Magick book (excellent book if you haven’t read it — and he’s a super person, too).
Magick Review
Nope, I’m not done.  Whether you are new to magick or an old hand at it, there’s always ways to contemplate, grow and expand.  Let’s review the major building blocks of magick (just quick — I promise).
To Know — This is the most important of the four building blocks.  It means to know within yourself that what you desire WILL come to pass.  It is an assurance within your heart, mind and soul — an agreement of all your senses.  To know always ends with a smile.  It is the thought, the bone structure, of what you desire.  It is the bud that will unfold and bring your desire to fruition.  In Braucherei, ‘ To Know’ is used often and many times stated in a veiled way, sometimes predicated on faith, belief, or a statement of what surely is.  To Know in your heart that things will work out is absolutely vital to magick and getting what you want or need.  You must supersede the monkey-mind and rise above your own doubts.  You must KNOW, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that what you desire will manifest.
To Dare — The total understanding that anything is possible and that the world is filled with unlimited possibilities.  You must DARE to BELIEVE.  And, in that daring moment, move forward to your desire.  You must take action, not sit on your butt and wait for good stuff to show up.  Get out there and start slugging!
To Will — The focus of your mind completely on your goal through thought, conversation, and action.  If you are thinking negatively or speaking badly (complaining, gossiping, whatever) then you just shot yourself in the proverbial foot.  Your will must be golden — do you understand?
To Be Silent — Oh, baby, baby, baby!  Learn to keep your trap shut.  Don’t screw up the field of possibility by sharing your methodology or your desire UNLESS the combined energy of another totally agrees with your goal or in some way will support the outcome AND you’ve shared a statement aloud along this line. To learn more about how not to screw yourself up with your own mind and mouth — you might like reading my book, MindLight.  In other words, don’t taint the field you are living in.  Let me give you a very wild visualization so you totally understand me once and for all.  You live in a field you created that travels with you wherever you go.  Unless I’m mistaken, last time I checked, people don’t shit in a bag and carry it with them so that they can smell it all day.  For example, if you say to me — My family is cursed — I know that you are clutching a mental contractor’s trash bag filled with elephant mind poop from yourself and probably family members.  For some reason, you are holding on to that stuff so tightly that it is oozing all over you.  Curses operate on your guilt, your low self-esteem, and your weaknesses.  And, bet you feel like shit, don’t you?  Let it go!  Change your environment (try my 2010 Great Magickal Release Program), change the way you think, change what you talk about.  Same thing with what you think, say, write, tweet, blog on a daily basis.  Emotional vomit does not make the world a better place — it just keeps the greedy, evil, and downright nasty empowered.  Don’t let ‘em win.  You are better than that!  So! As a reminder — What is rolling around in your head is just as important as what comes out of your mouth or onto a keyboard.  Keep it clean.  Keep it silent (meaning — do not play into negativity).  Keep it positive.  You will benefit.
Okay, so there you have it!  Your Holiday Challenge!  I dare you.  I double dare you — to do this little working every day for thirty days.  Tell us, along the way, how you are doing.  Write on my Facebook Wall, add an entry to this blog, keep us posted.  We’re all on this planet together — Believe Buddies are not a figment of your imagination.

Day 2 — Magickal Release Countdown 30 Days to an Awesome New You! by Silver RavenWolf

Your Mission Today — Clean out your wallet, purse, briefcase, duffle, backpack, bookbag, laptop carrier, toolbox (if that’s what you carry with you all the time), etc.  Get rid of all receipts that don’t count, gum papers, old coupons, bits of straw paper from your last soda, business cards you haven’t taken a look at since you collected them and other trash.  While you’re at it — donate good quality extra purses and the like that you haven’t used in six months to a charity or give away to a friend or family member who lusted after the design– throw away the battered, torn stuff.

On the surface you may think this isn’t an important move; but, consider it this way –  a wallet, purse, bookbag, etc., is something you carry with you every day (or most days).  The material has a lot of your energy already attached to it.  Scientifically, they have proven that every time you touch something, you leave a bit of you on it, and it leaves a bit of itself on you!  Considering how many times you’ve touched that bag, it truly has a LOT of you on it.  Plus, it represents your personal wealth.  If you look at your bag or wallet — what does it say to you about how you’ve been thinking lately?  Cluttered?  Dirty?  Worn?  If you have chosen to keep this vehicle, then a good cleansing is in order, physically as well as energy-wise.  Once you have cleaned that wallet or purse, why not smudge it with your favorite spiritual incense, give it a dose of holy water, or at least bless and magnetize it for financial abundance.
Your wallet, purse, or briefcase (tool bags, too) represent doorways to your financial stability.  Is the doorway broken?  Filthy?  How can you expect to receive more money if the primary carrier you drag with you everywhere is in poor condition or filled with dirt and clutter?
Next, arrange all your paper money in one direction, and be sure that when you hand money over for payment of any kind that the face of the bill is pointed toward you.  This is an old superstition that actually seems to work.  The thought is that although you are parting with the paper, you are not parting with the energy of wealth.  Seed your wallet or purse with a small packet of money herbs (cinquefoil, mint, sassafras, patchouli — just to name a few, with a bit of cinnamon and vervain to keep that money coming).  While you are at it, check all credit and bank cards for expiration dates, license and registration, too.  If you love carrying pictures, why not add a few new ones and remove those that are tattered and out of date?
While you’re at it, check out your keychain.  Do you have any old keys on there that might represent a part of your life that has long closed?  Remove all old keys and dispose of them.  Cleanse your keychain and add a prosperity and protective charm.
If you have been carrying any other charms in your purse or wallet, take them out, close your eyes, and emotionally feel the energy.  Perhaps they need to be cleansed and re-consecrated or require another ritual charge.  Or, maybe you’ve been thinking of creating a talisman or amulet to carry around and just haven’t had the time.  Stones such as smoky quartz, onyx, jet, and obsidian are great for warding.  Thursday and Friday the moon is in 4th quarter Scorpio — a great time for banishing, or making an exorcism charm.
Uh-oh, after all this you’re saying…I hate this old bag…and I don’t want to clean it.  Fine, get a new one as long as you get rid of THIS one (or one in your closet).  This month, for everything you bring in — you must take something out unless your life is super cluttered, then the rule would be:  For every one thing you bring in — you must take three things out.  Ha!
And you never know, you might luck out and find money you squirreled away in that hidden pocket, or discover that your favorite pair of earrings didn’t get lost — they were in the bottom of your purse all along!
My Release Diary: I began my Release Challenge this year seriously thinking about what I want to keep in my life and what I want to let go, what I’m forced to deal with given my own previous choices, what I have happily received this year given my  decisions, and what goals I’d like to accomplish by next year at this time.   Self review is never easy, so I prefaced this rake-myself-over-the-coals-with-a-glittering eye scenario with the Braucherei Morning Ritual I wrote about yesterday and a nice, strong cup of coffee.  I realized that all the things I’ve been procrastinating over have negative, emotional detritus attached to them, and if I want to move forward, I need to deal with those feelings and jettison them from my brain and my field once and for all.   My mantra for this year’s release program is:  I can do this.  Simple.  Straight forward.  No riders or prefaces.  I can do this.  I can.  I will.  Consider it done.
Today’s picture?  Oh, that!  Well.  It is a big lesson in life.  A private one that I debated on sharing, and then thought — you know — someone out there might learn something from it, too.  So, here goes.
This year my youngest son decided that for my Yule gift, he would renovate my bedroom.
No, you don’t understand.  This house is 200 years old.  My room has not been touched since 1909.  I am not kidding.  My son found the license plate in the wall to prove it.
Over the years I worked on various other rooms in the house; but, I always let mine go.  I sleep there.  Get up.  Close the door.  Don’t go back in there until I sleep there or change the sheets once a week.  It isn’t like I haven’t tried.  Twenty years ago I told a girl friend of mine about the state of the room, and how I wanted to fix it up; but, didn’t know how to repair the studs, plaster, or even remove the wallpaper.  She said, “Oh!  I can do that!  I’ll help you!  Show me!”
I took her to the bedroom.  She was silent, dead silent as her big eyes roved over the room.  She turned around, walked out, and said, “Sorry, not a chance.”
Yep.  That’s how bad it was.  And the plaster continued to buckle and make dust babies.
Then, two years ago, when I did my first, personal release challenge, I emptied the room save for the bed in hopes of actually fixing the sleeping hovel.  I began sanding the window frames and slapping spackle on the big, gaping holes.  Which fell back in the holes.  The room energy once again came to a dead stop.  Dad got sick.  We had to paint the trim on the outside of the house.  The economy went in the toilet, and hopes of a real bedroom went with it.
Momentarily, I met defeat.
Then, about a year ago, I got the bright idea while talking to Lady Sherry in Nevada that if I just did a teeny-weeny bit to that room every day or at least once a week, I just might be able to change that room, which I now felt had been fighting me tooth and nail (literally) for thirty years.  Lady Sherry and I joked about how I was going to peel just a bit of paper off that wall, and while I did it, I would visualize what I wanted the room to eventually look like.  We joked, but all jokes carry a thread of the serious.  So I actually did what we laughed about.  I peeled that wallpaper a little bit every day, and as I peeled it, I envisioned what I would like the room to become.  I said to myself, if I can just peel enough of this old crap away, there will be a tipping point, and this stuck energy will finally move along!  Every morning for eight months I have opened my eyes to a bigger and bigger patch of denuded wall.  Every morning I visualized what I would like the room to look like (eventually).  I figured that if I  just peeled a little bit of that damned wallpaper off that disintegrating horsehair plaster (I do not lie) each day or each week, that somehow, some way I could make that room change even though I didn’t possess the skill or money to do it.
In the spring and summer I had some false hope.  My area experienced a series of minor earthquakes.  It was my hope that the room would collapse (when I wasn’t in it) and then I might get a new room.  No such luck.  Those jerry-rigged studs combined with that nasty plaster and soiled, maroon floral paper held strong.  Bleck.
Then, a month ago, my youngest son said:  “You’ve done so many wonderful things for me.  I’m going to build you a new bedroom.”  And so, he is.  The fine layer of dust that I’ve cleaned five times already this week has once again settled throughout the house is a testament to this fact.
My point in telling you this personal story (because it is rather an embarrassment — that I’ve been sleeping in a room that even a slum lord wouldn’t touch for 30 years) is that no matter how long you have been dealing with something…any issue…you can change it, even if it means picking at it a little bit at a time.  Don’t listen to your own excuses — no time, no money, no skill — that’s just bullshit talk that will cripple you.  All you have to do is work toward that tipping point, and then it is all boom-sailing to the goal (or darned well close to it).  Nothing is ever too big.  No goal is ever too large.  Baby steps are better than no steps at all, even if all you do is peel a bitty piece of paper off a wall.  Eventually, the tide will change, and the wonderment of your dream will unfold.  Just keep your unfettered mind on the goal and your focus, in this case, on the wall.  Let this program be your tipping point to whatever it is you truly desire — let me, and those participating, help you get to where you want to go.  You can do it, I know you can!
In 29 days you really will be an awesome new you!

How to Decorate a Wiccan Yule Altar

As Yule approaches, Pagan people's religious focus goes from death to life.
Yule is a festive celebration of light, the sun,
rebirth and nature, and the decorations on your altar should
capture that merriment with rich colors,
scents, evergreens and lots of lights.
Even if you have not collected any Wiccan ritual tools yet,
you can still have a beautiful and meaningful Yule altar with objects
and decorations that are easy to find at this time of year.
Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Altar cloth of green, red or gold
  • Red, Orange, Yellow or Gold pillar candle
  • Evergreen branches
  • Additional candles
  • String of Christmas lights
  • Forest animal figurines
  • Cinnamon essential oil
  • Citrus
  • Crystals or icicle decorations
  • Wiccan tools (optional)
  1. 1
Set up your Yule altar facing north, the direction that aligns with the season of Winter. Drape it with an altar cloth, scarf, sheet or piece of scrap fabric in one of the primary seasonal color: green, red or gold.
  2. 2
Set a cauldron, or some other festive bowl or vessel on the center of the altar. Place a pillar candle into it that is gold, red, yellow or orange--any solar color. The cauldron, or any such vessel, is a symbol of the Goddess' womb. The candle is a symbol of the Sun God being reborn at Yule. If you like, make solar symbols on the candle with paint or glitter to make it special and set it apart from the rest. Rub the candle with cinnamon oil. Leave it unlit until your begin your ritual observance, or until sunset on the eve of the solstice.
  3. 3
Place evergreens on the altar. This can be branches cut from a tree or found at a Christmas tree lot, a small potted evergreen, or imitation evergreen garland pinned around the side of the altar in a scalloped design.
  4. 4
Hang a string of Christmas lights above the altar. Hang additional evergreens or ornaments if you wish to make your altar the focal place in the room.
  5. 5
Add additional candles and any Wiccan tools that you may have to your altar, in an arrangement that pleases you. Place a bowl of citrus fruit, which with their bright orange and yellow colors represent the sun. Other things associated with the season are nuts, pine cones, acorns, holly, bayberry, or mistletoe that can also be scattered on the altar or placed in a pretty bowls. To represent the winter snow, use clear quartz crystals or icicle ornaments.
  6. 6
Place symbols of forest animals on the altar, as this is the season for nature's rebirth. Stags are especially meaningful as they are symbols of the Wiccan God. Snow birds, squirrels, and any other furry woodland creatures are also appropriate. Remember that your altar should be meaningful to you, so any other items that represent the season to you will be a nice addition.

I thought that this might help anyone you was looking for some ideals for there alter, so I hope this help...Blessing )0(
